From December 6 (Sat) to December 27 (Sat), Gallery MAC in Haeundae, Busan, will present Jung Myung Kim’s solo exhibition To Them, With Honor.
Born in Busan in 1945, Kim studied sculpture at Hongik University and earned his master’s degree in art education from Keimyung University. He later served as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Pusan National University from 1982 to 2008. Over the past half-century, Kim has pioneered a distinctive trajectory within Korean contemporary art, working across painting, sculpture, objects, and installation. Through series such as Scrap, Book, Finger, and Speech Bubble, he has explored human consciousness, civilization, and the excess and emptiness of contemporary imagery. In this exhibition, he presents a broad spectrum of his work, with a focus on his recent series Artistic DNA and To Them, With Honor.
This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the artist’s reconsideration of his place within the lineage of art history, while exploring the potential for art to be reborn from fragments of paint. Highlighting the point where “horizontal and vertical thinking intersect,” Kim expands his long-established visual language by merging it with traces of the great masters. To Them, With Honor serves as both a tribute to the past and a question toward the future, offering a profound meditation on the artistic DNA we inherit and how it may be passed on to the next generation. |

Jung Myung Kim Solo Exhibition 《To Them, with Honor》
To Them, With Honor – An Artistic Lineage Reborn from Fragments
Born in Busan in 1945, Kim Jung Myung has spent more than half a century working across painting, sculpture, objects, and installation, establishing himself as a central figure in Korean contemporary art. Beginning with his Scrap and Red series in the mid-1970s, followed by Frame and Canvas, Calendar, Book, Finger, Speech Bubble, Big Head, and others, he has developed a distinctive visual world that traverses the boundaries between everyday objects and cartoon-like symbols, between history and myth, education and play. Throughout his practice, he has consistently posed a subtle yet incisive question: How do we perceive, articulate, and remember the world?
Having studied sculpture at Hongik University and art education at Keimyung University, Kim taught at Pusan National University’s College of Art from 1982 to 2008. The layers accumulated during his years as educator, researcher, and artist permeate the depth of his work. This exhibition, To Them, With Honor, focuses on his most recent series—Artistic DNA (2021–) and To Them, With Honor (2023–)—and offers a significant moment in which his long-standing formal language is repositioned and expanded within a broader art-historical context.
Artistic DNA Found in Broken Paint
The origin of this exhibition lies in an unexpected accident. When a large acrylic work fell and shattered, the artist recalled traces of Kandinsky, Pollock, Matisse, Picasso, and Monet within the paint fragments. What he perceived in those small chips was not mere material, but “jewels of spirit”—condensed memories of art history, experimentation, and failure.
The Artistic DNA series begins from this moment of recognition. By attaching heads and tails to fragments of paint and arranging them so that they seem to swim across a glass surface, Kim visualizes the moment when art is reborn from its remnants. Here, paint sheds its role as a tool for making an image and instead becomes an autonomous entity that asserts its own presence.
This attitude resonates with Kim’s long-standing critique of civilization. In works such as Book, Finger, Speech Bubble, and Big Head, he exposed the tension and emptiness produced by the excess of knowledge and imagery in contemporary life. In Artistic DNA, this critical perspective condenses into the form of “fragments,” within which a new generative energy emerges. It becomes the artist’s fundamental response to the question: What follows after critique?
Dialogue with Masterpieces: To Them, With Honor
In the Energy Communion series initiated in 2021, Kim wrinkles printed reproductions of masterpieces to create relief-like surfaces, overlays them with glass, and places his “artistic DNA” forms atop them, thereby interlacing classical imagery with his own formal vocabulary. What matters here is neither reproduction nor parody, but the tension and resonance that arise from the collision of different eras, materials, and images.
The To Them, With Honor series (2023–) expands this approach in a more direct manner. Portraits and symbolic elements associated with Warhol, Basquiat, Picasso, Monet, Manet, and other figures in art history are recomposed through the artist’s unique sense of color and form, merging with the energetic materiality of fractured paint to become a new form of sculptural painting.
Recalling the portraits of saints and sages that adorned his childhood home, and the musicians and writers whose images he once pinned to his room, the artist asks: “Why could I never hang the images of the artists who shaped me most?” For years, an insistence on originality and an aversion to imitation kept him at a distance from such figures. Yet now, he acknowledges that he stands within the continuum shaped by them—that what returns to him today as “honor” is, in part, a recognition of unspoken debts and gratitudes. This is not mere homage, but a quiet admission that art lives only within relationships—with predecessors, with others, with time.
Where Horizontal and Vertical Thought Intersect
Kim has long emphasized to his students that “one must see the world where horizontal and vertical thinking intersect.” If horizontal thinking embodies contemporaneity—visual culture, social context—vertical thinking embodies the depth of art history, intellectual history, and philosophy. This exhibition captures a rare moment in which these two axes face one another openly.
As fragments and masterpieces, paint and print, historical figures and viewers, flatness and dimensionality intersect and overlap, the artist asks how the energy of art can be carried across past, present, and future. In this sense, To Them, With Honor is at once retrospective, grounded in the present, and open to what is yet to come. Here, “honor” is not only a gesture toward the past, but a declaration of the creative act—the lifting of fragments to grant them new life.
Conclusion
Working from Busan, Kim Jung Myung has built a language that is unmistakably his own. This exhibition brings into visibility the unseen lineage—predecessors, mentors, contemporaries—that made that language possible. To Them, With Honor is both a greeting to the past and a question toward the future: What should art inherit, what should it relinquish, and what must it newly create? As the artist discovered in the smallest shards of paint, perhaps dormant artistic DNA resides even within the slightest remnants. This exhibition seeks to awaken those quiet genes, inviting each of us to consider: To whom do we offer our honor?
